Living and working where others go on vacation
The district of Berchtesgadener Land is the south-easternmost district of Germany and Bavaria.
On a surface area of 207,564 acres with three cities and twelve communities from Laufen to Königssee, 101,000 people are fortunate enough to live and work where others go on vacation. On both sides of the German/Austrian border that is becoming ever less visible, there extends a magnificent countryside with the World Heritage Site of the city of Salzburg in its center.
In this district, scenic beauty, lakes, mountains, old cities, culture, tourism and high-tech come together. This combination produces a highly efficient mixture of branches consisting of large, middle-sized and small companies. Since the opening of the European Union towards the east on May 1, 2004, the district of Berchtesgadener Land und the entire EuRegio region from Salzburg to Berchtesgadener Land to Traunstein is now located in the "Heart of Europe". This economic region with the central city of Salzburg thus has a prominent position with respect to economic geography.
It does not suffice to mention the scenic attractiveness of the region with its many opportunities for recreation and leisure time and its large proportion of businesses in the tourist trade and in the hotel and restaurant industry. One must also thereby point out the balanced structure and high productivity of the enterprises of the district in the sectors handicrafts, trade, commerce, industry and farming. These enterprises offer such a high quality of their products and services that they are competitive on an international basis.
Therefore, the economic structure of the district is strongly characterized on the one hand by tourism and spas and rehabilitation institutions. On the other hand, manufacturing enterprises and middle-sized trade companies also form a significant economic pillar. In particular in the sector of manufacturing enterprises, reference must be made to the numerous precision mechanics firms surrounding Berchtesgaden and Bischofswiesen. Today these firms are highly specialized and employ a total of more than 700 employees in the southern part of the district. Other industrial centers are the communities of Ainring and Saaldorf-Surheim as well as the city of Freilassing. Here the competencies are in the areas of plant construction/machine engineering and in the metal working industry.
To assure the further development of the economic site Berchtesgadener Land, sound research and development work must also be carried out in the companies of the district. This can only be accomplished by a well functioning technology transfer as well as by close cooperation between the companies and the respective training institutions. A central position is hereby assumed by Salzburg, the location of various advanced training schools.
Thus the district possesses all the positive hard and soft site factors that constitute an attractive economic region. This includes a very good infrastructure for transportation with freeways, highways, railroad lines and the Salzburg airport; reasonably priced commercial real estate; as well as good opportunities with respect to the acquisition of specialized employees and managerial staff. This situation is rounded off by service and customer oriented local governments and authorities as well as swift and unbureaucratic approval procedures. Here companies and investors can settle in an economic region that exhibits the high technological know-how needed to conquer markets throughout Europe. Thus the district of Berchtesgadener Land offers the best prerequisites for an excellent economic location in the heart of Europe..
