Description of location

The Administrative District of Deggendorf

The district of Deggendorf has about 117,000 inhabitants who live on the "Sunny side of the Bavarian Forest", as correctly stated by the slogan of the tourism branch for the district of Deggendorf with its more than 210 acres. Many factors combine to contribute to the attractiveness of this residential and economic location.

Located in the center of Lower Bavaria, the district presents itself as an international turntable, in particular with respect to the EU expansion to the East.

48 km of freeway with 6 exits along the freeways A3 Regensburg-Passau and A92 Munich-Deggendorf, that cross at the only freeway intersection in Lower Bavaria, 77 km of federal highways including the B8, B11 and B533 and another 472 km of main roads afford access to the district and form the junction of the economic axes Munich - Landshut - Pilsen - Prague and Regensburg - Passau - Linz - Vienna.

Furthermore, the district is also connected to the supra-regional railroad network by the ICE railroad junction Plattling.

The favorable site conditions are rounded off by the vicinity to Munich's international airport that can be reached in one hour driving time which is faster and better than the time needed by many inhabitants of the state capital city itself.

Deggendorf's Danube harbor lies on the most important central European waterway and its free port is the only inland free port in Germany besides the one in Duisburg.

The district's settlement policy has already achieved a great deal of success, the positive development here has led to the settlement of a well mixed structure from the areas of industry and trade. Besides the cities of Deggendorf, Plattling and Osterhofen the other 23 communities of the district also invest considerably in the establishment of commercial and industrial properties in order to provide the best possible prerequisites for the settlement of companies.

Especially the co-operation between the cities of Plattling and Deggendorf corroborates the positive development of the district. In the currently valid version of the overall Bavarian state government development plan the "possible principal center" Deggendorf/Plattling has been upgraded and classified as a "principal center".

Besides its central and favorable site conditions, the economic location Deggendorf offers not only a climate that is propitious for entrepreneurs but that is also inhabitant-friendly, which is reflected above all in an exemplary structure in educational and health facilities.

The Deggendorf technical college began operation in the year 1994 and since then it has continually expanded its fields of study which in turn has led to an increase in the number of students. Apart from many successful common projects with local companies, several promising new companies have also developed therefrom.

In addition, the establishment of the founders' center "ITC Innovation and Technology Campus", as part of the "Future Offensive" of the Free State of Bavaria, underlines the significance of the development site, district of Deggendorf, and the attractiveness of the region.

Along with general educational institutions, technical colleges and vocational schools, the district's comprehensive offer also includes other specialized technical and vocational schools such as e.g. for IT businessmen as well as institutions for adult education. A variety of very different athletic possibilities, the charming landscape and numerous cultural sights in the district provide diversion and relaxation, but also sources of revenue for the tourism trade, that also has a high ranking.

The combination of traditional and modern, the attractive location at the gateway to the Bavarian Forest, the significance of the free port and the technical college as well as the infrastructural location at the junction-point of important streams of traffic as a result of the border opening, all contribute to the fact that the district can consider itself to be a genuine alternative to congested urban areas.
