Commuter Balance 2007

Commuter Balance 2007

A commuter is a gainfully employed person (registered as an employee obliged to pay social insurance) whose residence (principal domicile) is not identical with the site of his workplace and who travels regularly or irregularly between his residence and his workplace.

A commuter balance is a balance of the commuters entering and those leaving a region. A commuter balance is calculated at community level and it provides an indication of the respective community's economic structure. Thus centrally located municipalities and industrial communities generally have a positive commuter balance because of the jobs available there whereas residential areas in urban hinterland as well as rural communities usually have a negative commuter balance.

The communities shown in red in the thematic display are communities with a commuter surplus, those shown in blue are communities with a negative commuter balance.
